The fall occurred when there were about 40 kilometers left by the end of the stage, at the Montjuïc circuit. At that time, Dan Martin was fifth overall and Romain Bartet eighth. The Catalan cyclist Marc Soler was also involved, and one of the most harmed was the Basque from the Basque Country, Garikoitz Bravo, who had to be taken by ambulance to a hospital.
