A few days after his 42nd birthday, Zdeno Chara has extended his expiring contract with the Boston Bruins for a year. The Slovakian captain of the traditional club from New England is thus entering his 14th season in the jersey of the Bruins – and already 22nd season in the NHL.

The 2.06-meter defender receives in the season 2019/20 two million US dollars as a base salary. In addition, another $ 1.75 million in performance bonuses may be added. Already for the current season 2018/19 Chara had signed a similar one-year contract, but with five million dollars as base salary. The bonuses are – in both the old and the new contract – as follows: After ten games completed Chara receives 1.25 million dollars, another $ 250,000 each are due to reach the play-offs and a Stanley Cup victory.

Despite advanced age Chara, alone as a leading figure, even in the current season, not to imagine the squad of the Bruins. Although his points production (career best scores: 19 goals in 2008/09, 52 points scorer 2011/12) in the current season continued to fall (four goals, seven assists in 55 games). With +16, Chara once again has one of the best plus / minus balance sheets in Boston’s squad. Chara McAvoy (22:04) and Torey Krug (21:20) are only two behind Chara McAvoy (20:59) with an average of about 21 minutes per game.

Chara earned in his NHL career, which began in 1997 in the jersey of the New York Islanders, so far just under $ 100 million. In 2011, the left-wing defender with the Bruins won the Stanley Cup.
